If you have noticed those strings of letters and numbers on your tires, you may be wondering what they all mean. Actually, it's pretty easy to discover the size of your tire with these numbers. Here's how to do it.

First, there are several series of codes on your tire. The codes you will want to look at are the big series of codes that begin with the letter P. It will look like this P225/55R17. The P simply means that this is a tire for a passenger vehicle. The 225 is the width of the tire in millimeters. After that, the number 55 tells you the aspect ratio of the tire's sidewall to the width. In this example, the tire's sidewall is 55% of the width. Next, you will see the letter R. That simply means that this is a radial tire. Finally, the number 17 tells you the size of the tire in inches.
